Settled, mild days, cool nights and the crowds gone home. Stable weather and available sites make autumn the pick for many Victorian campers.

Most Parks Victoria campgrounds are booked online ahead of time, and the popular coastal and Prom sites release on a rolling window months out and sell in minutes. Know the release date, be logged in early, and have your dates ready.
CFA (Country Fire Authority) — check the fire danger rating and Total Fire Ban status for your district at cfa.vic.gov.au before you light anything.
Autumn (Mar–May) and mid-spring give Victoria's most reliable mix of mild days, cool nights and available sites — the easiest windows for a first trip.
Cup weekend, Labour Day and Easter fill coastal and Prom sites fast. Book the moment the release window opens, or aim for the weekend either side.
What the seasons throw at you
Even summer nights drop hard, and the high country can freeze any month. A bag rated about 5°C below the coldest night you expect is the difference between sleeping and shivering.
Tiger and brown snakes are active Oct–Apr. Wear boots in long grass, watch where you step and never put hands where you can't see.
Southerly changes roll in fast along the surf coast. Peg out properly and bring a tarp for shade and rain.
On Total Fire Ban days no solid-fuel fire is legal. Always pack a gas stove so a ban never means a cold, uncooked dinner.
The high country can deliver snow, wind and fog in any season. Check the BOM mountain forecast the morning you leave and carry full waterproofs.
