Quick tips
- Coastal and alpine park sites release on a rolling window and sell out the moment they open. Set a reminder for the release date.
- Total Fire Bans are common through summer. On a ban day, solid-fuel fires are illegal — carry a gas stove as backup.
- Even summer nights drop hard, and the high country can freeze any month. A bag rated about 5°C below the coldest night you expect is the difference between sleeping and shivering.
- Tiger and brown snakes are active Oct–Apr. Wear boots in long grass, watch where you step and never put hands where you can't see.
- A genuinely warm sleeping bag and an insulated mat — Victorian nights are the thing beginners underestimate most.
- A solid rain jacket and a tarp, even in summer.
- A gas stove so you can still cook on Total Fire Ban days.
- Wildflowers, full rivers and green bush, though the weather swings hard. Great for the coast and forests once the worst of the cold passes — always pack a warm layer.
- Start with a site within 2 hours of Melbourne for your first night away.
- Book early for coastal and holiday-weekend sites — they disappear fast.
